Routine checkups can be stressful
Yesterday I went for my bi-yearly mammogram and checkup. Mammograms are always a little stressful; any test that squishes your body parts into pancakes is stressful. But as someone who’s had breast cancer, these bi-yearly tests are particularly stressful because there’s that nagging worry in the back of your mind, what if I have cancer again? But, my previous two post-cancer...

Broccoli with onions, garlic, black beans
Woops! I ate the whole thing before taking a photo. It was delicious. This is a good way to eat more broccoli (at least it is for me). Broccoli is a great anti-cancer food. It’s in the brassica family and has all the right stuff for staying healthy.
1 Tbsp olive oil
1/2 small onion, chopped
1 large clove garlic (or 2 small), chopped
2 cups broccoli florets and peeled stems (or eat the...

Get your data
This post by Jeff Jarvis reminded me of the importance of getting my data in the process of taking control of my medical experiences. It describes how Xeni Jardin, an editor at Boing Boing, recently described how she asked for and received images from her MRI (after being diagnosed with breast cancer), and when reviewing them, discovered that one set of images was from someone else.
I can only...

Broccoli and "cheese" sauce
I was looking for a more interesting way to eat steamed broccoli on rice, so I invented this non-dairy version of a traditional cheese sauce. It came out quite well.
3/4 cup raw cashews
3-4 Tbsp parsley
1 garlic clove
1 Tbsp mustard
Juice of 1-2 lemons
Salt and pepper to taste
1 head of broccoli, separated and/or cut into florets
Soak the cashews in water for about 6 hours. Drain. Add all...

Cancer is everywhere
Two bloggers that I follow fairly regularly because I like their writing (Xeni Jardin and Susannah Breslin) were recently diagnosed with breast cancer. I read about both today.
Once you’ve had cancer, or you know someone close to you whose had cancer, you notice it more. You notice news items about potential cancer treatments, about people who’ve been diagnosed with cancer, about...

Necroptosis may lead to new cancer treatments
This weekend, the Institute of Cancer Research in London announced they’ve discovered a new way to kill cancer cells: necroptosis. If you’ve had cancer then you’re probably very aware of the process by which cells usually die, apoptosis. Unfortunately, some cancer cells are able to resist chemotherapy drugs which create apoptosis.
Until recently, it was thought cells could...

Derek Miller's last post
Derek Miller is a blogger and software developer & Web designer who has been blogging for many years. He died on May 4 from colorectal cancer. He wrote a blog entry for his wife to post on the day he died. (Note, I don’t know how long that link will be active, his blog has already been removed, although you can still access past articles and a few other things he’s written).
It is...

Breast cancer and bras →
I am a big fan of CrazySexyLife and was interested to see this article on cancer and toxic clothing posted recently. One section of the article talks about bras, and based on the text in the article, you could draw the conclusion that wearing a bra causes breast cancer.
Needless to say, I wanted to find out more, so I found the original research article referred to in the article on...

Flying away
I’m heading off to a conference in California today. My first work travel since my cancer saga started. Going to Hawaii was easy - I knew I’d be immersed in a healthy environment the whole time I was away. Going to Santa Clara is a different thing altogether. Now, California is known for its “fruits and nuts” so you’d think I’d be in heaven, but I’ve...
Turn on Nrf2 protein to create antioxidants
This is an interesting article about antioxidants. It suggests that just as important as ingesting antioxidants is triggering the body’s own antioxidant creating mechanism. This is done by turning on a protein called Nrf2 (yet another example of how we can influence our gene expression through food! amazing). And lucky for all us anti-cancer dieters, broccoli, turmeric and green tea (all...
