Flying away
I’m heading off to a conference in California today. My first work travel since my cancer saga started. Going to Hawaii was easy - I knew I’d be immersed in a healthy environment the whole time I was away. Going to Santa Clara is a different thing altogether. Now, California is known for its “fruits and nuts” so you’d think I’d be in heaven, but I’ve been to Santa Clara many times and let me tell you, it’s not so fruity or nutty. Santa Clara is mostly ugly office parks, conference centers and strip malls (it never ceases to amaze me how the human race has so ruined this beautiful planet). ”Real food” choices are limited.
So I rented a car and my first stop after landing at the airport will be Whole Foods in Cupertino. I called and supposedly will have a fridge in my room (yay!) and plan to stock it with green juices and lots of fruit. I’ve packed a big bag of organic raw nuts and raisins in my backpack for the flight. I’ll post updates about what I’m able to find to eat!
In other news, Oprah is apparently doing a show about eating vegan for a week. I never watch Oprah, but I know she has a huge impact on people and so I’m always thrilled when she does something good for people and/or planet. One of my heroes, Michael Pollan, will be on the show. Thank you Oprah! [Update: heard from a bunch of people that the show was disappointing, and mostly talked about replacing highly processed meat-based food with slightly less processed but packaged vegan food, and didn’t go into the importance of fresh, whole foods, or the problems with meat-based diets in general. Too bad - opportunity lost.]
