Necroptosis may lead to new cancer treatments
This weekend, the Institute of Cancer Research in London announced they’ve discovered a new way to kill cancer cells: necroptosis. If you’ve had cancer then you’re probably very aware of the process by which cells usually die, apoptosis. Unfortunately, some cancer cells are able to resist chemotherapy drugs which create apoptosis.
Until recently, it was thought cells could only die through a process called apoptosis.
Because apoptosis is often blocked by cancer cells, drugs frequently do not work which allows the tumour to grow and spread.
Now, in an important step, the findings from the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre at The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in London reveal a new process in which cells can die called necroptosis.
This new breakthrough relies on a different method of cell death and can be activated by switching on certain proteins in the cell.
